Part of a second year industrial design core studio at Emily Carr university, Magnitive was developed as a partnership with a classmate Taegan Morgan, an 8 year old co-creator and myself. Coupled with 3 different decks of cards that focus on phonetic learning, Magnitive is a stackable game that allows children with dyslexia an alternative way to ‘build-up’ their language skills. The board has a metal mesh laminated into the larger terrain pieces, as well as powerful magnetics built into the stackable pieces to create a game that reinforces phonetic skills in a firmly grounded and tangible way. For every phonetic question card completed (with several different skill levels) players are awarded movement pices and terrain pieces to create their own lands and adventures. During game play, children are able to use their own small toys and action figures to personalize the adventure, choosing to build their own paths towards fun and learning in a way that is exciting and magnetic.
